1.Prepare a website base

Use the WIX platform to build a website

Register yourself.

Start from the “Portfolio” template and create a website that will become your work showcase

Make sure you have at least:

  • home page

  • a “my species” page (to put THIS work)

  • a page that will contain a chosen subject that you will explore in depth throughout the year

  • a menu allowing you to navigate between your pages

  • nothing superfluous having no use

Customize your site to suit your taste​

2.Pick up

Choose and capture 3 samples in your neighborhood

1 sample of an animal that does not have an internal skeleton (grasshopper, butterfly, ant, dragonfly, spider, etc.)

    freeze it for 2 days

1 sample of a plant without seeds, flowering or not. (leaf and its fruit, needle segment and cone, foliage and flower, etc.)

1 sample of a plant with seed OR a mushroom

(small extract, piece…)

3.Publish your collection and identify your species

Upload your observations online

Upload all your photos online to your “my species” page

Transcribe all the picking details recorded in the previous step

Take photos up close and under a microscope and add them

Find the name of your species

  • Be curious and don't be afraid to make mistakes.

  • Browse the web looking for the name of your species, add the words Quebec, Montreal, tool, identification or species when you search

  • Use an app likeiNaturalist if you wish

  • Several tools/website are at your disposal, here are some of them;

4.Describe.  Where does she live? What is she doing ?

Details the identification of the species

  • The common name

  • The scientific name of the species

  • Genre

  • The reign

Describe what would characterize another individual of the same species. You can mention a remarkable fact of the species. You can include videos and/or sounds.

Find and create a link to a websitea taxonomic key (at worst partial) to help you identify the species (or a partial species).

Describe the habitat in which you collected the sample.

Your description must include at least 3 biotic factors and 3 abiotic factors.

Also describe the general habitat of the species. You can put a map of the territory there. 

Describe the ecological niche of the species. Find and name at least 3 aspects of your ecological niche.

5.Close-ups, reproduction and adaptations

Observe your sample closely

  • Draw and identify at least 3 characteristics of;

    • Its overall appearance (real size or under the magnifying glass)

  • Draw and identify at least 3 characteristics of;

    • Its appearance under the microscope (4x, 10x or 40x)

  • What type of cell makes up your sample?

Describe the mode of reproduction of the species

 

Describe the adaptations

  • Describe a physical feature of the species and formulate at least 2 hypotheses on the reason (usefulness) of having this feature.

  • Search (on the web) for a behavioral particularity of the species and formulate at least 2 hypotheses on the reason (usefulness) of having this particularity.
